Meet the Writing Team: Sharon Lehman, RD

by | Apr 8, 2024 | Business Advice, RD Careers, Writing Skills

The path to being a freelance health and nutrition writer can be different for everyone. I shared my story of how I became a freelance writer in a previous post. I thought I would give the rest of the team of expert RD writers an opportunity to share their journey as well. Here is Sharon Lehman’s story where she shares her tips to make money writing nutrition articles and how she started to land freelance recipe development jobs.

So, you’d like to know how to make extra money as a dietitian. I found myself wondering the same thing several years ago. Today, I’m lucky to call freelance nutrition writer and recipe developer one of my favorite, flexible, and fulfilling jobs.

Professional Background

I graduated from the University of Delaware in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. That was followed up by completing my dietetic internship, passing the national exam, and becoming a Registered Dietitian. I spent several years working in clinical and outpatient settings before realizing it wasn’t the best fit for me.

I took some time away from the field of dietetics to pursue a Master’s degree and spent several years working in education. During that time, I studied for a year at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, earned my Integrative Health Coach certificate, and experienced a renewed interest in my own personal health and well-being. Coming full circle, I felt myself being called back to the world of health and nutrition.

How I Started As A Freelance Nutrition Writer

I knew I wanted to work in the field and spread practical wellness and nutrition information, but I had no clue what that work would look like. So, I started a food blog as a creative outlet to share healthy recipes, some writing, and photos.

I don’t exactly remember how or when I joined the RDs Who Write Facebook page, but I did, and it was a huge blessing. I didn’t know there were so many RD writers out there! I’d always enjoyed writing and felt like I’d found my nutrition niche!

Ana Reisdorf, writing coach extraordinaire, shared freelance nutrition writing tips and job postings within the group. I got my very first paid writing gig from the Facebook group. Since then, I’ve been writing with RWS: Content + Strategy for about six years, along with freelancing for other clients that have come from job boards and referrals.

My favorite part of being a dietitian writer is the variety of topics I get to research. There’s a part of me that’s a forever student and will always love continued learning and discovering so that the aspect of my work can be fun. I’ve also been able to incorporate recipe development and photography (one of my favorite hobbies!) into my content creation and writing services. Plus, working from home or anywhere I choose has serious perks!

As for the future, I’d like to continue freelance blogging, along with recipe development and photography. It is something I truly enjoy!

Tips to Make Money Writing Nutrition Articles

If you’re interested in writing as a dietitian, the best advice I can give is to practice! Start a blog, research and write about topics you’re interested in, and get to know other freelancing dietitians.

I’m still learning the ins and outs of freelancing writing and blogging. Having a writing coach or mentor can be a huge help, especially if you’re brand new to this niche! Ana’s guidance and the team have been invaluable in teaching me how to make money writing articles as a dietitian.
